biography

Jack Savage SRMS* (b. 2001)is a painter and miniaturist living and working on the Isle of Skye. After dropping out of school at 17, his childhood love for creating was rekindled, and he has since reconnected with his younger self through his art practice.

His work explores childhood memory, grief, and the fragile ways we hold onto the past. He returns to moments from his life, retelling and reimagining them though small-scale worlds. As a trans person, he has often felt detached from his younger self. His creative process becomes a way of bridging that distance: recovering fragments of memory and allowing them to exist again in physical form. He is particularly interested in the dream-like quality of childhood memories, turning them more into stories.

Although specialising in painting, his process always begins with 3D work: constructing small dolls, puppets, and dioramas to stage the scenes for his (often) miniature oil paintings, his methods ranging from miniature woodworking to micro knitting. His most recent body of work is an exploration of the memories he has of his late grandfather and his home, on a miniature scale. This is reflected in the deeply personal nature of his work.
